To ensure a smooth trip, it’s advisable to check the ferry schedules in advance and secure your tickets.

Plane Option: Alternatively, you can opt for a flight to the island. There are three daily commuter flights available from Chofu Airport, which is a brief 15-minute bus ride from Chofu Station. The flight itself takes approximately 25 minutes, providing a swift and scenic route to Oshima.

1. Explore Mount Mihara and the Black Desert at Ura-Sabaku

The centerpiece of Oshima is undoubtedly Mount Mihara, a dormant volcano that dominates the island’s skyline. Hiking enthusiasts will be in their element here, with several trails leading to the summit. The view from the top is simply awe-inspiring, especially during sunrise or sunset. Don’t forget to snap some photos to commemorate this incredible experience.

Even on a sunny day, the conditions atop Mount Mihara can quickly shift to blustery and reduce visibility. Therefore, it’s advisable to pack a jacket, just in case!

And just when you thought you’d seen all the area had to offer, venture to the Ura-Sabaku Desert, Japan’s only actual desert, for a surreal and unique experience. This unexpected black desert landscape on an otherwise lush island starkly contrasts its surroundings. The black sand dunes and barren terrain make for a fascinating exploration.

It’s a great spot for photographers and a fascinating place for anyone seeking a change of scenery. Take the chance to witness this extraordinary natural wonder on your visit to Oshima.

Prepare to be captivated by the extraordinary Baumkuchen geological formation when you first lay eyes on it. This stratigraphic cross-section, aptly nicknamed Baumkuchen for its resemblance to the famous German cake, is a sight to behold. Remarkably, only a handful of such locations worldwide are open to the public as tourist attractions.

The intricate layers of soil offer valuable insights into the mysteries of nature, revealing that the stacking of these layers occurred over an astonishing span of about 15,000 years. To witness the wonder of Oshima’s Baumkuchen formation at its best, drive along the circular road connecting Motomachi Port and Habu-Minato Port.

This unique geological phenomenon provides an enthralling opportunity to delve into the Earth’s history and gain a deeper understanding of the geological processes that have shaped Oshima. It’s an absolute must-visit for anyone intrigued by geology and the island’s natural wonders.

5. Indulge in a Unique Oshima Island Culinary Delight at Habu Port

When it comes to cuisine, Oshima has a treat in store for you at Minato Zushi. This renowned establishment offers a culinary experience that’s as unique as the island itself. One of the highlights is their bekko sushi, a local speciality sushi dish that’s truly one of a kind.

Bekko sushi features fresh white meat fish marinated in an irresistible mixture of soy sauce and island chilli peppers, resulting in a flavor profile that’s as bold as it is delightful. It’s a typical Oshima Island dish, and you won’t find it quite like this anywhere else.

Not only is this soy sauce marinade delicious, but it was actually born out of necessity. When the island’s warm climate posed challenges in keeping fish fresh for extended periods, local green chillies were added as an ingenious solution to enhance the sterilising effect and extend the shelf life. This inventive approach to preserving food finds its roots in the unique demands of the remote island environment, where resourcefulness became the mother of culinary invention.

Minato Zushi is located within Habu Port, a quaint, idyllic fishing port that might just be one of the best places to immerse yourself in the island’s captivating culture. Incorporating several other small businesses, such as the exceptional Hav Cafe.

Once an old private house, Hav Cafe has been transformed into a delightful establishment by Naoko Terada, a seasoned travel journalist. With a rich background in worldly adventures, Terada thoughtfully renovated the building, ensuring that the old-fashioned charm of Habu Port was respected and preserved.

In addition to their exceptional coffee, Hav Cafe is known for its popular menu items such as raisin bread and pizza toast. Beyond the culinary delights, the cafe also offers a selection of antique items for sale, including bags, badges, and more. It’s a place where you can savor great flavors and explore unique treasures.
