THE ROOTS OF
TOSHIMA’S
BEAUTY

Toshima Island, located 140 kilometers south of central Tokyo, is among the smallest of all the Izu Islands. Though only 4.12 square kilometers in size, Toshima offers an unparalleled glimpse into raw island life, and is best known for being covered in lush forests and vegetation.

Over 80 percent of the island is covered in tsubaki (camellia japonica) trees, which flower in winter and are later harvested to make tsubaki oil, a popular ingredient in many Japanese beauty products. Toshima holds the title of being Japan’s top producer of tsubaki oil, alongside its larger neighbor, Oshima.

Toshima is currently home to approximately 300 residents, and the entire island is a designated protected national park, preserving its pristine natural environment and offering visitors a glimpse into raw island living away from the heart of Tokyo’s sprawling cityscape.
