ECOSYSTEMS
Renowned for its untouched natural landscapes and rich biodiversity, Hahajima is home to a remarkable variety of tropical flora and fauna that have adapted to its isolated environment. Notable species include the Bonin white-eye songbird, Japanese wood pigeon, giant Ogasawara flying fox, and “pepe” mushrooms—a rare fungus that glows green in the dark.
Accessible only by a two-hour ferry from Chichijima, the island’s remote location has helped preserve both its pristine environment and the traditional lifestyle of its small community.
Hahajima, together with Chichijima, is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for its abundant birdlife. In 2011, the Ogasawara Islands, including Hahajima, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, underscoring their global significance in biodiversity conservation.
